Leader Duties

for the Sunday School of

Morningside Baptist Church

  

Duties of Department Directors (Preschool, Children, and Youth)

  1. Enlist teachers for your department, with the approval of the Minister of Education.
  2. Sunday Duties:
    1. Arrive early – be sure your department area is ready, lights are turned on, and each leader is on the job.
    2. Be visible.  Greet leaders, members, and visitors.
    3. Help visitors locate their proper classes.
    4. See that your department records are kept and reported correctly.
  3. Communicate with your teachers on a regular basis.
  4. Oversee the work of the other department leaders and teachers.
  5. Serve as the primary contact person for the department.
  6. Encourage department leaders, teachers, and members to be involved in outreach.
  7. In conjunction with other leaders, plan department fellowships.
  8. Consult with the Minister of Education if any leaders under your authority are not performing their duties properly.
  9. Consult with the Minister of Education each time a substitute teacher is needed.

 

Duties of Class Coordinators (College & Career and Adult)

  1. Enlist other class leaders, with the approval of the Minister of Education.
  2. Sunday Duties:
    1. Arrive early – be sure the classroom is ready and each leader is on the job.
    2. Call the class to order at 9:00 a.m.  Thank everyone for coming and then explain the procedure for marking attendance and contacts.  Tell when the class prayer sheet will be passed around the class.
    3. At 9:01 allow the outreach Leader to lead the “Outreach Minute.”
    4. At 9:02 welcome and introduce any guests, and then yield the floor to the teacher.
    5. Be sure the class prayer sheet (and a pen or pencil) is passed around the room.
    6. Beginning at 9:45, signal the teacher that his or her teaching time is running out.
    7. At 9:50 thank the teacher and then dismiss choir members, orchestra members, and nursery workers.  Share the written prayer requests with the class.  Lead the class prayer time (or call on someone to pray).
    8. Dismiss the class at 10:00 a.m.
  3. Oversee the work of the other class leaders (for a list of these leaders and their duties see the document titled, “Adult Class Leader Duties”).
  4. Serve as the primary contact person between the Education Office or Church Office and the class.
  5. Maintain regular communication with the teacher.
  6. Encourage the class members to be involved in outreach.
  7. In conjunction with other class leaders, plan a quarterly fellowship.
  8. Consult with the Minister of Education if any leaders under your authority are not performing their duties properly.
  9. Consult with the Minister of Education each time a substitute teacher is needed.

 

Duties of Teachers

  1. Pray, study, and prepare to present a life-changing, learner-involving Bible lesson each Sunday, based upon the curriculum supplied to you by Morningside Baptist Church.
  2. Gather teaching materials, resources, and make copies needed for class before Sunday morning.
  3. Sunday Duties:
    1. Arrive early – 8:30 a.m. (15 minutes before Sunday School) is a good time.
    2. Be sure your classroom is ready and you are ready to teach.
    3. Begin teaching on time.  For Preschool and Children’s classes that time is 8:45 a.m.  For Youth, College & Career, and Adult classes that time is when your Department Director dismisses you to class or your Class Coordinator yields the floor to you.
    4. Stop teaching no later than 9:50 a.m.
  4. Maintain regular communication with your Department Director or Class Coordinator.
  5. Be available to minister to and disciple class members outside of class time.
  6. Be available to serve as a Care Group Leader for some of the members of your class, if needed.
  7. Encourage the class members to be involved in outreach.
  8. Be available to help your Department Director or Class Coordinator with the planning and implementation of fellowship and outreach events.

 

Duties of Substitute Teachers

  1. When called upon to teach: pray, study, and prepare to present a life-changing, learner-involving Bible lesson each Sunday, based upon the curriculum supplied to you by Morningside Baptist Church.
  2. When called upon to teach: gather teaching materials, resources, and make copies needed for class before Sunday morning.
  3. When called upon to teach, carry out the “Sunday Duties” described above under the “Duties of Teachers.”

 

Duties of Outreach Leaders (Adult Classes)

  1. Attend Sunday School faithfully.
  2. Participate in outreach and ministry visitation each week.
  3. Encourage as many class members as possible to become involved in outreach and ministry visitation.
  4. Manage the class prospect notebook.  Keep it up to date.
  5. Form visitation teams from within the class.
  6. Assign prospects to the visitation teams.
  7. Keep outreach before the class on a regular basis.
  8. Lead the “Outreach Minute” each Sunday morning.
    1. Invite and encourage people to participate in outreach and ministry visitation.
    2. Tell how many prospects the class currently has.
    3. Offer to pair up any without partners.
    4. Encourage class members who visit at alternate times during the week to complete and turn in an “I Went Visiting” card.

 

Duties of Care Group Leaders (Adult Classes)

  1. Attend Sunday School faithfully.
  2. Contact each member in your group every week.
  3. Try to build a friendly relationship with each group member.
  4. Encourage your group members to attend Sunday School.
  5. Complete a “Care Group Leader Report” form each week and turn it in to the Class Coordinator on Sunday morning. 
  6. Notify the Class Coordinator of serious needs in the lives of care group members.

 

Duties of Class Greeters

  1. Attend Sunday School faithfully.
  2. Arrive between 8:30 and 8:35 a.m.
  3. 8:45-9:00 a.m.:
    1. Welcome members and visitors as they arrive.
    2. Get complete info on all visitors. 

                                                    i.     Give the white copy of the enrollment/visitor slip to the Class Secretary.

                                                  ii.     Give the yellow copy to the Class Coordinator.

                                                iii.     Give the pink copy to the Outreach Leader.

    1. Invite new people to enroll in Sunday School.
    2. Introduce visitors to other class members and see that they are seated with members who will be friendly to them.
  1. At the end of class:
    1. Thank visitors for coming.
    2. Offer to help those with young children locate the nursery.
    3. Escort visitors to the Worship Center.
  2. Be sure visitors are seated with class members in the worship service.  If no one else sits with them the greeter should sit with them.
  3. Assist ushers in getting visitor information to the visitors.
  4. Encourage visitors to fill out the worship service visitor card.
  5. At the conclusion of the service escort visitors to meet Brother Wayne.  See that their visitor card is dropped in an offering receptacle or handed to an usher.
  6. Thank visitors for attending and offer to help them find their way to the nursery or to their vehicle, as needed.

 

Duties of Class Secretaries (Adult Classes)

  1. Attend Sunday School faithfully.
  2. Receive the class roll sheet and the prayer sheet after it has made its way around the room.
    1. Check the roll sheet for errors.
    2. Take a “head count” of the attendance and compare it to the attendance on the roll sheet.  Make corrections as necessary.
    3. Attach any enrollment/visitor forms to the roll sheet.   Make sure the class number is written on every form.
    4. Attach any completed “I Went Visiting” cards to the roll sheet.
    5. Remove the prayer sheet from its clipboard.  Put the clipboard in the class basket
    6. Put the completed roll sheet in the class basket and place it outside the classroom door no later than 9:30 a.m.
    7. At 9:50 a.m. give the prayer sheet to the Class Coordinator.

 

Duties of Class Treasurers (Adult Classes)

  1. Attend Sunday School faithfully.
  2. Receive money that is collected from the class members.
  3. Safeguard such money and give a regular accounting of it to the Class Coordinator.
  4. Under the direction of the Class Coordinator use class money to meet special ministry needs in the lives of the class members.  Such ministry needs may include:
    1. Sending flowers, placing memorial Gideon Bibles, or making a gift to the church building fund in the event of the death of a member of a class member’s family.
    2. Purchasing some of the food when taking a meal to a class member who is bereaved, sick, or has had a new baby.
