DUTIES OF DEPARTMENT DIRECTORS
Morningside Baptist Church
The
department director is one of the most important factors in the success, growth,
and development of a Sunday School department.
The department is made up of a group of Sunday School classes within a
specified age range. The Department may have as few as two classes, or as many as
ten classes.
The department director will be a born-again believer in
Jesus Christ, an active member of Morningside Baptist Church, and hold to
Biblical inerrancy and other doctrines taught by Morningside Baptist Church.
The specific responsibilities of the department director are as follows:
Communicate. The department director will be the primary source of communication between the minister of education and the teachers within his department. The department director will communicate a vision, urgency, and excitement for the work of the Sunday School, along with various administrative matters as they arise. The department director will also communicate matters of importance with the department members through leading the Sunday morning department assembly.
Minister. The department director will attempt to get to know the teachers within his department, and minister to their needs wherever possible. In this respect, the department director will function much like the care group leader in an adult class, with his "group" being the teachers within the department.
Direct. The department director will lead and direct the work of the department. The work of the department can be summarized as reaching people for Bible study, teaching the Bible, seeking to win persons to Christ, and developing (or maturing) Christians.
Encourage. The department director will challenge and encourage each teacher, class officer, and class member to become personally involved in the department's work of reaching, teaching, winning, and developing. As a part of this task, the department director will be expected to take part in outreach visitation, and encourage each teacher to do the same.
Organize. The department director will see that each class in his department is properly organized for outreach and ministry. The department director will work with the minister of education in planning for any necessary changes in department organization.
Enlist. The department director will assist the minister of education in enlisting teachers for the department, and will assist the teachers, when needed, in enlisting class officers. The department director will also help teachers arrange substitutes when they will be absent. The department director may need to substitute teach in the case of last-minute absences.
Fellowship. Since fellowship and friendships are so needed in our modern, fast-paced world, the department director will plan (or appoint someone to plan) quarterly department fellowship activities, and encourage individual classes to get together for fellowship on at least a quarterly basis. Fellowship activities should always be used as opportunities to reach out to prospects, as well as encourage members.
Plan. The department director will work with teachers in planning department events. The director will also plan with the minister of education and other Sunday School leaders during the weekly department planning time (6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays) and during other planning meetings.
